A Generation That Did Not Work — And Why

At Kex Art, we believe in transparency and honesty, especially when it comes to the creative process. Recently, we embarked on a project that, despite our best efforts and initial excitement, did not yield the results we had hoped for. This is an honest reflection on that experience, what went wrong, and the valuable lessons we learned along the way.

The Concept

The idea was to create a series of AI-generated artworks that captured the essence of a “lost generation” — a theme inspired by the complexities and contradictions of modern life. We envisioned a collection that would explore themes of disconnection, nostalgia, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. The concept was ambitious, and we were eager to see how our AI tools would interpret and express these abstract ideas.

The Process

We began by feeding the AI a diverse range of inputs, including literature, music, and visual references that we felt encapsulated the spirit of the theme. Our goal was to create a cohesive collection that would resonate with viewers on an emotional level. However, as the AI began to generate images, we encountered several challenges:

• Lack of Cohesion: Despite our careful curation of inputs, the AI struggled to produce a consistent style or narrative. The images were varied and interesting but lacked the thematic unity we were aiming for.
• Emotional Depth: While the AI excelled at creating visually striking images, it often fell short in conveying the emotional depth we desired. The artworks felt more like technical exercises than expressions of the complex themes we had in mind.
• Interpretive Limitations: The AI’s interpretation of the inputs was at times too literal, resulting in artworks that were more illustrative than evocative. This was a significant barrier to achieving the abstract, thought-provoking quality we were after.

The Realization

As we reviewed the initial outputs, it became clear that the project was not aligning with our vision. The AI was not able to bridge the gap between our conceptual ideas and the final artworks. We realized that while AI is a powerful tool, it is not infallible and requires careful guidance and interpretation to achieve the desired results.

This experience highlighted the importance of setting realistic expectations and understanding the limitations of AI in the creative process. It also underscored the value of human intuition and creativity in shaping and refining AI-generated art.

The Lessons Learned

Reflecting on this project, we have gained several key insights:
